EUGENE (KMTR) - All over town, local farmer's markets - are basking in the glow of bustling crowds and healthy sales - now Lane County can look forward to another market joining the fray - the Downtown Weekday Market.
The Tango Center's ambitious effort is spearheaded by Executive director, Greg Bryant. He wants the center to become a location for a micro-business incubator. Bryant plans to fill the center's 8-thousand square feet of space with about 20-30 local vendors. Services, artists, crafts and food.
Bryant says the dance hall brings in about 500 people a week for tango lessons and dancing. It's already equipped with wi-fi and now he wants the weekday market to be a combination of educational and vendor space - for small business owners of all types. Bryant says "there's not a lot happening in the daytime - so we thought we'd use the same space during the day for a market" Before it became a Dance Hall, the historic building was Eugene's Indoor Public Market in the 1920's.
Bryant wants to get back to what the real purpose the building was designed for. "we're just basically taking the name of the building, and doing the thing that it was built for. There were 80 farmers who needed to be in front of the public - so they all came and moved into this building permanently downtown."
The Eugene Producers Public Market closed - in 1959 when larger stores moved into town shifting the balance of food supply. The tango center was created five years ago. That jumpstarted the downtown nightlife scene. Now the Tango Center wants to make it's presence felt in the daytime. Bryant says "rather than let the building be empty at any time.. It's a market slash café during the day." But at night - the tango center still plans to be a dance hall.
